The use of ultrasound has become an extension of clinical evaluation due to its rapid and accurate detection capabilities. CCU is a standardized course from the SCCM. The CCU,Critical Care Ultrasound, teaches how to perform and interpret ultrasound examinations in acute patients. Students acquire competencies in performing and interpreting ultrasound images, and diagnostic challenges in the field of critical care and emergencies. In the CCU, participants perform technical skill stations that represent live models as well as clinical problem-solving in high-fidelity ultrasound simulators.
6 ECTS credit course, withtheoretical lessons in ebook(in English) and 16 hours of in-person seminars and workshops(in Spanish) in our clinical simulation laboratory at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona. Registration fee: €800 + fees. This course awards a Certificate from theSociety of Critical Care Medicine and a Higher University Course diploma from the University of Barcelona.
admission requirements
Multidisciplinary course, aimed at doctors and nurses. Those who have less than 10% of their degree program pending can also access it.
methodology and teaching resources
Students will be provided with pre-course study material (CCU ebook in English) 4 weeks in advance. The CCU ebook is an integral part of the student's learning and has been prepared under the direction of SCCM by an international team of leading educators in ultrasound in critical care and emergencies in anesthesiology, emergency medicine, internal medicine, nursing, pediatrics, and surgery.
The theoretical lessons of the course are taught virtually (in English) via the SCCM teaching portal. After completing this virtual part, an online evaluation test is conducted by SCCM.
After completing the virtual part, the in-person part (in Spanish) is scheduled, where key aspects of each theoretical lesson are consolidated, and simulation workshops with integrated cases of the main actions for initial support of a critically ill patient are conducted. The in-person program is held at the Clinical Simulation Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (Clinical Campus) of the University of Barcelona.
